COVID - 'freedom day' in England.
I write this a couple of days after England’s COVID ‘freedom day’ - a release from all COVID restrictions, which strikes me as nothing but stupidity and which, for me, only confirms the incompetence of the UK government.Throughout the UK the delta variant is running wild and positive cases are going through the roof, particularly in England . Admittedly, the link between new cases, hospitalisations and deaths have been greatly reduced because of the vaccine - but this has not been totally eradicated and many people, including some who have received both jabs, are ending up in hospital or worse. This is stressing the NHS and reducing the ability of the health service to catch up on the backlog created by the virus.
The UK government’s stance seems to be “if not now then when?”. I would suggest that ‘when’ should not be now but after all adults, and maybe all over twelve years of age, have been double jabbed and also after this delta variant has been brought under control. This would restrict the spread of the virus which should, in turn, help reduce the development of new strains which the vaccine might not be so effective against. I fear that the UK government, in removing all restrictions at this stage, is only going to result in the delta variant running totally out of control and ruining all the good work and sacrifices made by everyone over the past year and a half - not to mention a further increase in deaths which could be avoided.
Although moving more slowly than England, I also feel the Scottish government has made a mistake in moving to their level zero at this stage. This, I fear, will only see new cases rise in Scotland more than they otherwise might have. There will, after all, be a likely increase in new Scottish cases due to the relaxation of the restrictions here and on top of that, given we are in the holiday season, the continued increase in England will only leak over the border as many coming north on holiday with the virus, but not yet aware of that, will only result in even more new cases in Scotland. I suggest that delaying the move to level zero should have been delayed for a few more weeks - just to ensure that the currently falling number of new cases in Scotland was maintained. If that proved not to be the case then retaining the previous levels until things were indeed looking better throughout the UK might prevent having to take a step back by reintroducing more severe restrictions once again.
On a slightly different, but associated, topic we have the recent revelations about Boris Johnson from Dominic Cummings. If what Cummings says is correct then that only proves how incompetent and dishonest Johnson is. At the same time, I have to admit that I don’t trust a single word that Cummings utters about anything. In that case Johnson might be both competent and honest - but I fear I am using false logic here and both Cummings and Johnson are not to be trusted in any way or on any subject.
